Selma Lagerlöf in Russia

Selma Lagerlöf is the first woman who received a Noble Prize in literature and became member of the Swedish Academy. One of her most famous works “The Wonderful Adventure of Nils Holgersson” has been for a long time among the most favorite children’s books in Russia. However, few Russians know that Lagerlöf has authored books for adults too. This 20th century’s major Swedish author visited Saint Petersburg and Moscow in 1912, and fourteen years later, in 1926, gave a rather controversial speech at the Swedish Academy in which she described her trip and her perception of Russia in general. The talk will deal with two topics: the fate and reception of Selma Lagerlöf’s texts in Russia and the ambiguous view of Russia as it was expressed by this renowned writer.
