Selma Lagerlöf in Russia

Selma Lagerlöf is the first woman who received a Noble Prize in literature and became member of the Swedish Academy. One of her most famous works “The Wonderful Adventure of Nils Holgersson” has been for a long time among the most favorite children’s books in Russia. However, few Russians know that Lagerlöf has authored books for adults too. This 20^th century’s major Swedish author visited Saint Petersburg and Moscow in 1912, and fourteen years later, in 1926, gave a rather controversial speech at the Swedish Academy in which she described her trip and her perception of Russia in general. The talk will deal with two topics: the fate and reception of Selma Lagerlöf’s texts in Russia and the ambiguous view of Russia as it was expressed by this renowned writer.
