On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Hanseatic city of Rostock and in a time of new tensions, the Baltic sea region is being reintroduced as a common cultural space: in readings, an international conference, an anthology and a multilingual online library, the open access virtual Baltic Sea Library, will produce, present and discuss an intercultural Baltic literary canon. “Reading the Baltic” will bring together writers, translators, scholars, and the public to discuss the significance of the region and its cohesion in an increasingly complex Europe. Does a mutual regional identity exist beyond historical and current conflict and national boundaries? How are literature, identity and nationalism related?

Die Ostsee lesen

Im Umfeld der 800-Jahr-Feier der Hansestadt Rostock und vor dem Hintergrund neu aufflackernder Spannungen soll die Ostsee als ein gemeinsamer kultureller Raum neu erfahrbar werden: in Lesungen, einer internationalen Konferenz, einer Anthologie und der vielsprachigen, offen zugänglichen Online-Bibliothek virtual Baltic Sea Library wird ein interkultureller Ostsee-Kanon präsentiert und diskutiert. „Die Ostsee lesen“ bringt Schriftsteller, Übersetzer, Literaturvermittler und Publikum zusammen, um die Bedeutung der Region und ihres Zusammenhalts in einem komplexeren Europa zu verhandeln: Gibt es eine gemeinsame Identität über historische wie aktuelle Konflikte und nationale Grenzen hinweg? In welchem Verhältnis stehen Literatur, Identität und Nationalismus?
